Residents out in force to walk wind farm site

Melton Times, www.meltontimes.co.uk 9 February 2011

A walk across the proposed Asfordby wind farm site on Sunday attracted a good turnout with 80 people joining organisers STOP who are representing residents opposed to the scheme.

The campaigners say the turbines proposed are on an ‘industrial scale’ and too close to too many homes.

A spokeswoman for STOP said: “Noise from wind turbines this big at other sites continue to ruin the quality of life for people living nearby.

“In contrast, the walk highlighted the quiet and agricultural setting of the site and the efforts that have been made to attract wildlife back into the areas of disturbed land through the establishment of wetlands and woodland.

“Many people were shocked at how big these structures will be comparing the 50m test mast to the surrounding landscape. The proposed 125m turbines will tower above the historic town and villages of Melton.”

For its part Peel Energy says there are ‘no technical or environmental barriers to the approval and development of the wind farm’ and visual impacts will be ‘localised and restricted to selected locations within 2km of the wind farm’.

lAb Kettleby Parish Council is to hold a public meeting about the wind farm on Thursday, February 17 and Asfordby Parish Council will be doing the same on Tuesday, February 22.
