County to vote on wind farm plan

DANVILLE – Vermilion County Board members will vote on an intergovernmental agreement regarding plans for a wind farm in the northern part of the county.

The county announced on Jan. 25 that a representative from International Power filed an application with the county for the Hoopeston Wind Project – the first wind turbine project to begin the permit process for the county.

Vermilion County Board Chairman Jim McMahon said board members will vote Tuesday on an intergovernmental agreement between the county and Grant and Ross townships.

The agreement, if approved by board members, would call for the three entities to work under the same attorney who would formulate a road use agreement between the three and International Power.

The road use agreements are intended to make sure public roads are properly used and maintained during the turbine work.

The Hoopeston Wind Project calls for the erection of 49 wind turbines south of the village of Reilly between County Roads 3800N and 3500N. The permit fee cost to International Power is $1,000 per turbine.

The county has been meeting with other companies regularly about wind turbine projects, but has not indicated which ones. Horizon, Invenergy Wind Development and Eco-Energy have each initiated plans for specific wind turbine projects in the western and southern parts of the county.

In addition, the BP and Iberdrola companies have inquired in the past about potential projects.
