Campaigners’ joy at wind mast refusal

Staffordshire Newsletter, www.staffordshirenewsletter.co.uk 4 February 2011

Plans for a wind monitoring mast near Church Eaton have been thrown out by South Staffordshire Council – to the delight of campaigners fighting wind farm plans.

Wind Prospect’s application for a temporary 70m wind monitoring mast on land at New House Farm, Brineton was refused by the council planning committee on Tuesday.

Wind Prospect’s application for six 126-metre high (base-to-tip) wind turbines and an 80-metre anemometry mast at the same Brineton site is set to be discussed by the council next month.

More than 50 people staged a peaceful protest against the mast plans outside Tuesday’s meeting. Stone MP Bill Cash has also opposed both applications.

Tony Lendon, chairman of King Street Stag (Stop Turbine Action Group) said:

“Whilst we are delighted with the decision to reject the application for the temporary mast, we know that we cannot think that the job has been done.

“It will be far harder to convince the council to reject the main application, but with the tremendous support we have had from local residents, councilors, parish councils, neighbouring district councils, MPs and MEPs, we are confident of further success.”

Paul Grimshaw, development manager at Wind Prospect Developments Ltd, said: “We are disappointed with the refusal of the met mast application.

“We will now wait for the decision notice from the Local Planning Authority, which will give more information on why the application was refused.

“Until we have that information, we are unable to determine whether to appeal this decision.”
