It’s no secret Goshen County is a windy place. But will that wind be harnessed for electricity?

State Sen. Curt Meier (R-LaGrange) is sponsoring House Bill 91, which calls for a feasibility study for wind-powered electricity at state facilities. The facility considered in the bill is the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution (WMCI) in Torrington.

The bill would appropriate $200,000 for the study from the general fund to the Department of Administration and Information. The State Building Commission would conduct the study, measuring the feasibility of constructing wind turbines sufficient enough to supply half of WMCI’s electricity demand. Meier said these wind turbines typically produce 1 to 1.5 megawatts each.
