Rugby campaigners battle wind farm plans

Coventry Telegraph, www.coventrytelegraph.net 2 February 2011

Nearly 100 people braved the cold to gather for a protest against wind farms.

Under the banner Against Subsidised Windfarms Around Rugby (ASWAR), campaigners met on the steps of Rugby Town Hall to fight plans for new turbines around the borough, including proposals from Scottish and Southern Energy for wind farms at Churchover and Copston Magna.

ASWAR chairman Lorne Smith said: “The steps of the town hall were completely full and that really shows the level of concern. We think the economic argument is horrendous.

“Who benefits from these windfarms? The landowners and the developers. No one else benefits but we all pay for it.”

Rugby Borough Council has commissioned consultants to survey the local landscape and show which areas might be suitable for wind turbines.
