Bid for 17 supersize turbines

Wind farm operator Vattenfall wants to add 17 new turbines. Spokesman Mandy Broughton showed Whitstable city councillors the company’s plans on Wednesday.

The new turbines could be 30m taller than the existing 115m ones, and will be added to the west and south of the field, bringing them nearer the coast.

Chairman Mark Dance said the bigger turbines would look “out of kilter” and County Councillor Mike Harrison demanded: “Why is it coming forward over the demarcation line we fought so hard to get five years ago?”

Mrs Broughton said there were shipping and geological reasons why the farm could not be expanded in other directions.

Councillor Jenny Samper said residents would need some benefits to put up with it.

However, rival councillors in Herne Bay have already bid for any community cash-back to be spent on rebuilding their pier.

When the Kentish Flats wind farm was completed, bosses handed over £200,000 for an exhibition project in Whitstable Harbour. But the scheme never got off the ground and the money went to eco-projects instead.

The plans will go on display at Whitstable Castle on Thursday, February 24, from 2pm to 8pm.
