Wind power wins approval in Eastbrook

EASTBROOK – This small town made way for big wind last week.

The Eastbrook town office was standing room only Jan. 19 for a special town meeting at which residents overwhelmingly approved adopting a Wind Energy Facility Ordinance and other changes allowing and regulating wind turbines in town.

The vote was prompted by Boston-based wind developer First Wind’s interest in building a wind farm in Eastbrook and neighboring Township 16.

In December, First Wind subsidiary Blue Sky East, LLC submitted a permit application to the state Land Use Regulation Commission to construct nineteen 476-foot, 1.8-megawatt turbines on Bull Hill and Heifer Hill in Township 16.

The power from each turbine would flow to a substation and on to existing Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. Line 66.

The permit application had “some deficiencies” and has not yet been accepted as complete, said Land Use Regulation Commission Director Catherine Carroll.

“Not all the pieces are there,” she said.
