Collector fights wind farm

A community campaign is being launched in the New South Wales town of Collector, north-east of Canberra, in a bid to stop a planned wind farm.

Late last year the multinational company Transfield Services revealed it planned to build a wind farm of up to 80 turbines along the hills between Gunning and Collector.

It is still subject to New South Wales Government planning approval, but nearby residents are already gearing up for a fight.

Rod Pahl from the Friends of Collector says residents are concerned about noise pollution, possible health impacts and the devaluing of property.

“One of the things that naturally happens is that when wind farms are proposed areas become less attractive to people who want to buy, so there is real concern that this will have a long term impact on the ability of Collector to actually grow and prosper,” he said.

Mr Pahl says their message is being broadcast on a billboard by the side of the Federal Highway.

“What the billboard basically says is ‘Transfield, go stick your 80 turbines somewhere else, try Sydney’,” he said.

He says the community is not opposed to renewable energy, just wind farms.
