Woodford board places stay on wind farms

EUREKA – The Woodford County Board has enacted a temporary stay on applications for special use permits for wind farms until Sept. 21, but the rule will take effect only if it is legal.

The stay was initiated by the county’s Conservation, Zoning and Planning Committee, which wants to revise the zoning code pertaining to wind farms.

“We have a mountain of information to go through,” said board member Duane Kingdon during this week’s meeting. “It is a monumental task. We must get our heads out of the sand and start addressing the problems of this county.”

“This has nothing to do with anti-wind or pro-wind,” said board member Shannon Rocke. “This is solely about property rights. Nothing protects property owners who live next to wind farms.”

The action does not affect the progress of applications for the Minonk and Roanoke wind farms, which were previously approved by the board.

The special use section of the zoning code affecting wind farms was enacted in 2005 and has not been changed since.
