Municipal wind turbine hearing postponed

FALMOUTH – The fate of a wind turbine at the town’s wastewater facility will be determined a few days later than expected.

On Thursday night, the Falmouth Zoning Board of Appeals postponed the hearing to determine whether Wind I, the town’s 1.65-megawatt turbine off Blacksmith Shop Road, required a special permit before it was built last year. The hearing is set to take place at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Town Hall.

Several residents who live near the turbine have complained about negative health impacts resulting from turbine noise, including dizziness, headaches and hearing loss. They claim the town skirted local bylaws by exempting itself from the special permit process. But town officials claim a special permit was unnecessary because the turbine is for municipal use.

The ZBA usually meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, but the special Monday meeting was scheduled so lawyers on both sides could be present, appeals board member Dennis Murphy said.
