Utility officially asks to build turbines near Lake Michigan

Consumers Energy has now officially put in an application for a permit to build the first large wind farm along the coast of Lake Michigan. The utility wants more than 50 wind turbines on land south of Ludington.

A spokesman for Consumers says the plan meets all the current zoning rules. But Mason County’s planning commission is considering changes to those rules.

Some people who live in the area are concerned the wind turbines would be too close to their homes. They want more than a mile between windmills and homeowners who are not part of the wind farm. Right now turbines could be as close to a home as 1,000 feet.

The planner in Mason County says Consumers would have to alter their application to comply with any changes the county decides to make.
