Plans lodged for Mayfield windfarm

Proposals for a new seven turbine windfarm in the Stewartry have moved a step closer to reality.

Cheshire-based Community Windpower Ltd last week applied for planning permission to develop the seven-turbine scheme on land between Rhonehouse, Tongland and Kirkcudbright.

If it gets the go-ahead the project, called Mayfield Community Windfarm, will feature seven turbines with a maximum tip height of 130 metres built on an area of land north of Black Stockarton Moor.

Once in operation, the farm would be capable of producing up to 17.5 megawatts, which developers say could power nearly 10,000 homes.

The News first unveiled details of the farm last January and Community Windpower said they were hoping to have the development up and running within three years.

They have also pledged to give £50,000 a year to the local community for as long as they power the farm.

Part of the cash would be used to fund three jobs – one of which would be an educational ranger.

And they reckon that if they get planning permission, it will take between nine and 12 months to complete.
