Hype & reality

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, www.pittsburghlive.com 6 January 2011

Commenting on the $3 billion grant included in the new tax bill for the wind power industry in The Associated Press story “Tax law full of goodies” (Dec. 25 and TribLIVE.com), Denise Bode, CEO of the American Wind Energy Association, said this sector “has been a bright spot in the recession so far.”

Really? An industry that can’t survive without a government subsidy doesn’t seem too “bright” to me.

Borrowing $3 billion that the taxpayers will have to repay, with interest, to bring back workers flies in the face of sound economics.

The truth about alternative energy sources such as wind, solar and biofuels is that they not only can’t compete in the marketplace, they place an additional cost on consumers and an additional burden on traditional energy sources.

As one wag said, “Hope is not reality.” In the case of alternative energy, hype is not reality.
