Group opposes Obama administration wind-power plan

The Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, the group that has fought the Cape Wind project off Martha’s Vineyard, has sounded the first opposition against the Obama administration’s plan to lease up to 3,000 square miles of federal waters in Nantucket Sound for wind-turbine projects.
Audra Parker, president of the alliance, said wind power costs twice as much as electricity generated by fossil fuels. “It’s more of the same,” she said. “It’s all about costs and siting.”
The U.S. Interior Department plans to set up a regulatory process to eventually site enough offshore wind turbines to produce up to 4,000 megawatts of electricity, or enough to power 1.7 million homes in Massachusetts.
