Wind turbine opponent to fight new plan

Uttoxeter Post & Times, www.thisisuttoxeter.co.uk 27 December 2010

A campaigner who successfully protested against a wind turbine plan has vowed to support a nearby action group fighting a proposed wind farm.

Severn Trent put up a 60-metre high wind-testing anemometer in Checkley in April 2009 to check suitability for a 132-metre turbine.

But the firm opted not to pursue the scheme following pressure from angry locals who formed the Staffordshire Turbine Action Group (STAG).

Group chairman Keith Flunder has now pledged his support to protesters against plans for Bagots Park, near Abbots Bromley.

East Staffordshire Borough Council is considering an application by SSE Renewables to put up eight 110-metre turbines at the site.

Mr Flunder said: “We are very interested in the outcome of the application which is being considered for Abbots Bromley.

“It will have a bearing on our situation to some extent if it goes through.”

Checkley is not on a list of sites earmarked by Severn Trent for a turbine for at least the next two years.

STAG is now pinning its hopes on the introduction of new legislation by the Government.

Mr Flunder said: “Lichfield, which we thought had been put to bed, has been put back on the list, which isn’t very good because we thought they’d get rid of single turbine sites like ours.

“We’ll have a meeting in the new year with councillors to discuss our options and go back to Cheadle MP Bill Cash.

“We’re still monitoring the wind and the results show it is not strong enough.”
