An Afan Valley councillor has welcomed council planners’ decision to defer a giant wind farm application.

At the latest Neath Port Talbot Council planning meeting, the application for the Pen y Cymoedd development was put back for a site visit.

The plans from Nuon Renewables include 79 turbines that could reach 145 metres high.

There has been opposition to the scheme with 107 letters and one petition of 47 signatures.

Glyncorrwg councillor Glyn Rawlings said: “I am absolutely pleased the planning committee has done this.

“I think there is so much information in that report and we need more time for consideration.

“I think this planning application would ruin Glyncorrwg and all the valley areas.

“I think the general feeling of people I have spoken is that if they were not so intrusive we would look more kindly on it because of the visual impact on the community.”

In a previous statement Nuon Renewables said the development would “provide a boost of more than £1 billion to the local economy during the 25-year lifetime of the project.”

The development will also create 300 jobs during the construction phase and 50 permanent jobs after.
