An utter disgrace to Shetland

The Shetland News, www.shetland-news.co.uk 15 December 2010

Tuesday’s vote on the Viking Energy wind farm application by the SIC was yet another serious breach of conduct by the majority of our inept and vested interest-riddled elected members.

All members of the SIC are trustees of the charitable trust and have repeatedly given political and financial support to the development.

Under their charitable trust hats they are part of the development and have a legal requirement to declare this interest in all council meetings on this matter, and as such should have done so and had no involvement in any voting.

It beggars belief that elected members continue to pursue acts of gross misconduct and again flies in the face of due process and proper democratic procedures.

Whilst the arguments for and against rage on, it is absolutely essential that the process that eventually arrives at a decision is done so legally, democratically, openly and at the risk of sounding naive – fairly.

It is absolutely outrageous and totally unacceptable that the members have such dirty hands in acting as developer and statutory consultee. This conflict of interests and misconduct must once again be brought to the attention of Audit Scotland.

The SIC’s elected members are an utter disgrace to Shetland!
