Appeal on wind project set for hearing

WOODSTOCK – The Woodstock Appeals Board will meet Wednesday to hear an appeal of the site plan approval for an industrial wind farm on Spruce Mountain.

The appeal was filed by Friends of Spruce Mountain.

The Planning Board approved Patriot Renewables’ site plan review application Jan. 5, and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection approved the project Oct. 5, Town Manager Vern Maxfield said. Town voters and the Board of Selectmen have also endorsed the development.

The project calls for five turbines on Spruce Mountain that will connect to the main power grid in the northeast section of town, he said. Construction is planned to begin as soon as possible in the spring.

Friends of Spruce Mountain “have been against the project since the plan surfaced last year and still feel it is not in the best interests of the town,” Maxfield said.

The Appeals Board will make a decision on the appeal, either Wednesday night or later, Maxfield said.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the Town Office meeting room in Bryant Pond village.
