Wind turbines 3 times the size of Nelson’s Column proposed for Neath Valleys

Plans for a controversial giant wind farm that will stretch across the Neath and Dulais Valleys have been recommended for approval by council chiefs.

The Nuon Renewables application, being considered by councillors tomorrow, is for an 84-turbine development at Pen y Cymoedd.

The plans include turbines 145 metres high – three times the size of Nelson’s Column.

There has been opposition to the scheme with 107 letters and one petition of 47 signatures.

Residents claim it will be too noisy, have an overwhelming visual impact, and say they fear the turbines will be a danger to wildlife and people.

Seven letters in support have also been received, which say that the proposals offer many opportunities for the local economy.

Aberavon AM Dr Brian Gibbons has called for a public enquiry, but Blaenhonddan Community Council has lent its support to the planning application.

A spokesman for Nuon Renewables said the development would “provide a boost of more than £1 billion to the local economy during the 25-year lifetime of the project.”

The development will also create 300 jobs during the construction phase and 50 permanent jobs after.

The spokesman added: “An additional £11 million will be invested directly into the Welsh and local economy every year and we have ensured that local communities see direct benefit from this inward investment.”

It is recommended that the council raises no objection subject to conditions, including a contribution of £3 million to secure the management of the Habitat Management Area, a contribution of £350,000 for a black graded cycle route within the Afan Valley, and to set up a community fund.

The application is to be determined under Section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989, as the ultimate decision will lie with the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change.
