Truck carrying wind tower gets stuck on off ramp

WCAX News, www.wcax.com 10 December 2010

A tricky transport for a huge piece of equipment being moved to a planned wind farm.

One problem with industrial wind power is that the towers are hard to transport on Vermont’s roads. The driver of a truck carrying a huge section of a wind tower learned that the hard way Friday in South Burlington. The tower section was so long, the truck could not negotiate the sharp curve on the northbound Exit 13 off ramp of Interstate 89.

The ramp was blocked for more than two hours until a pair of big-rig wreckers helped get the truck rolling again.

The tower piece was on its way to New York from Maine. The department of motor vehicles says a number of big pieces of equipment like this are making their way through Vermont. There are strict rules for transporting large equipment like this, including traveling in good weather and not at night.
