Benzie township passes wind moratorium

By Bob Allen, Interlochen Public Radio, ipr.interlochen.org 10 December 2010

Tuesday, a township in Benzie County voted to stop the development of commercial wind turbines temporarily. But Blaine Township officials want their attorney to check the language in the resolution before the six month moratorium goes into effect.

The township supervisor says the rules regulating wind turbines need revising to better deal with things like noise and set backs from property lines.

National wind developer Duke Energy wants to put up more than a hundred windmills along ridges in southern Benzie and northern Manistee counties. Each turbine would be nearly 500 feet tall.

Duke plans to begin construction in 2012, if they can find a buyer for the electric power.
