Wind turbines scheme ‘would destroy village’, Cumbrian inquiry told

Members of a group fighting proposals to put up three turbines near Westnewton say if it went ahead it would destroy their village.

Members of the Westnewton Action Group are fighting an appeal by Broadview Energy Group to erect the three 350ft turbines at Warwick Hall Farm which they say would have an “overbearing presence and destroy the character of their village”.

The comments came on the first day on an inquiry, held at the Oval Centre in Salterbeck, Workington, into the turbines after the original proposals by Broiadview were rejected by Allerdale Council.

Westnewton resident and chairman of the parish council John Ryden said: “These structures would detract from the lovely landscape we have here.

“These turbines will be visible from very long distances especially with regard to the Lake District National Park and the Solway’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

“There will be a significant visual impact on Westnewton and the noise and shadow flicker that the turbines produce will impact on residential amenity.”

Broadview Energy said that the turbines were needed to fill a massive gap in the North West for renewable energy and that coastal and on shore windfarms were needed in rural England.

David Hardy, representing Broadview Energy added: “This is a good scheme in an excellent location and is the sort of site that will have to come forward in the future.”

Concerns were also raised about the cumulative affect of the windfarms with another proposal for six at Tallentire.

The inquiry continues.
