Agreements say they can’t oppose the project

RIVERTON TWP. – With three of five members on the Riverton Township board having signed easement agreements with Consumers Energy to lease land to the utility for a wind farm, questions about whether the board could take action against the wind farm, if it wanted to, arose.

A group of local residents submitted requests for amendments to the Mason County Zoning Ordinance last week in hopes of addressing concerns about noise regulations, flicker, bats and road repairs and maintenance. The township board was asked Monday night to support putting a moratorium on Consumers Energy’s project, until the issues brought up in the requested amendments are looked into.

“When a landowner grants an easement, it is standard language in that easement not to oppose the project,” said Consumers Energy Public Information Director Dan Bishop in an e-mail this morning.
