Community wind turbine projects

The Press and Journal, www.pressandjournal.co.uk 6 December 2010

I refer to businessman Maitland Mackie’s views on people setting up their own wind turbine projects (the Press and Journal, December 2).

If it is simply a case of communities grabbing these “licences to print money”, why has Dong, the windfarm company owned by the Danish government, pulled out of onshore wind in Denmark? Communities in Denmark are fed up with the destruction of the Danish landscape and with paying just about the highest electricity charges in the world.

Will Mr Mackie be so glib in coming years, when the grid is overloaded with community wind power no one can use and those same communities are faced with enormous maintenance bills? Will the concrete on hills like those at Cairnborrow, Huntly, look so green then?

For Mr Mackie to call on the scouts and other members of the community to elbow their way to the trough is farcical, if not disingenuous.

Doesn’t wealthy Mr Mackie know that it is the elderly and low-paid who are paying severely – some with their lives – for governments’ expensive and ineffectual energy non-policies, intended to obscure decades of inaction and now conveniently coating companies like his with greenwash?

David Vardy,

Winds’ee,

Tarland.
