Board to determine application process for wind substation

CANTON – Planning Board members have determined that the town’s commercial use ordinance cannot be applied to an anticipated application for a wind turbine substation tentatively planned for construction off the Canton Point Road.

Board Chairwoman Kathy Hutchins said Code Enforcement Officer Jack Plumley is expected to meet with Patriot Renewables’ representative Tom Carroll to determine the type of permit needed for the structure.

That permit application will likely be submitted at the Jan. 6 Planning Board meeting.

At last month’s board meeting, members began discussions on which ordinances they should review in anticipation of a full-blown application for a possible wind turbine project for Canton Mountain.

The town does not have wind or zoning ordinances.

Patriot Renewables LLC of Quincy, Mass., has tentatively proposed construction of up to 12 turbines on purchased or leased property on Canton Mountain. The proposed substation, which would be very close to Central Maine Power transmission lines, would serve both the Canton wind turbine project and a similar project now under Maine Department of Environmental Protection review in Carthage.

A third project, proposed for Colonel Holman Mountain in Dixfield, could also hook onto the substation.

Hutchins has said that public meetings on Patriots’ turbine project will likely be held sometime after the first of the new year.
