No movement on Amherst wind farm

AMHERST – All is quiet as it relates to the future of a proposed wind farm near Amherst.

Acciona Energy is saying very little about the project it won the right to develop a couple of years ago.

“Acciona Energy remains committed to the Amherst Wind Power Project and is currently looking for a viable solution to move the project forward,” Starr Million Baker of INK Public Relations said in an email.

The company refused further comment on the matter.

Another project on the marsh between Aulac and Sackville has also been put on hold.

In March 2009 Acciona Energy confirmed the 30-megawatt farm that was supposed to go into service this past month would not be built that year because of economic conditions brought on by the recession.

Those comments were repeated in July when then-company spokesperson Eric Schneider said the conditions that existed in 2009 haven’t improved to the point where the company is prepared to move forward.

When the latest attempt to harness the winds of the Tantramar Marshes was announced in 2008, Acciona said it was investing $55 million in the wind farm that would include 20 turbines.

It was expected to generate enough electricity to power 10,000 homes and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 100,000 tonnes per year.
