City officials split on wind energy

Georgetown, S.C. – Georgetown city officials debate whether or not to allow wind turbines in the area. The City Planning Commission denied a proposal for a test wind turbine at Morgan Park. The unanimous vote will serve as a recommendation to the city council. The city council has the option of agreeing with the commission or overruling the commission’s decision.

Officials say the test site could be a 45 foot wind turbine with 6 foot blades. Experts say a turbine that size could generate 2.4 kilowatts of electricity – enough power to run a mid-sized refrigerator.

The planning commission says the turbine will take away from the beauty of Morgan Park, a historical natural landmark. Also, the commission argues that the turbine is not worth the amount of electricity it will produce.

Other city officials say a wind turbine would make Georgetown a go-to sight for renewable technologies. Wind turbines could also bring more jobs to the area.

Georgetown city council will make a final decision at it’s next meeting on December, 16th.
