DEP sued over wind turbine project

Lincoln – In late September, construction began on the Rollins Wind turbine project.

40 turbines are being built in Lincoln, Burlington, Lee, Winn and Mattawamkeag.

But not everyone is in favor of the project.

Friends of Lincoln Lakes has filed another lawsuit against the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

They ask that work be suspended because First Wind, the company building the turbines, is in violation of its permit.

The group claims First Wind has failed to prove it can adequately pay for the project, which is required by the Maine DEP.

John Lamontagne, a spokesman for First Wind tells TV 5 that the company has not received a copy of the filing yet.

He adds, “we’re happy to be moving ahead with this project, creating jobs, economic opportunity and, soon, clean energy. We’re looking forward to bringing this project online in the third quarter of 2011.”

Earlier this year, Maine’s Supreme Court rejected an argument from Friends of Lincoln Lakes, claiming the DEP moved too quickly on approval of the wind project.
