Wind turbine plans for Hackney Marshes dropped

Jasmine Coleman, Reporter, Hackney Gazette, www.hackneygazette.co.uk 29 November 2010

Plans for a wind turbine on Hackney Marshes have been ditched.

The council has decided not to move forward with a 120-metre turbine, which it hoped would help cut carbon emissions and attract investment, due to financial difficulties.

This comes despite a public consultation in late 2009 when 87 per cent of those who voted were in favour of the development.

Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney, said: ‘We’re disappointed that the current economic situation has resulted in the banks making it more difficult for electricity generation companies to borrow the money they need to build such turbines. We will continue to explore options for generation green energy, and we hope to be able to revisit the idea of a turbine in the future.”
