Protect Canyon gateway from industrialization

www.azdailysun.com 25 November 2010

To the editor: Consider: 62 400-foot-tall industrial wind turbines in the viewscape of the Grand Canyon National Park. This should be of concern to most of our entire country, not to mention the residents of the great state of Arizona, the “Grand Canyon State.” Before we start littering the Grand Canyon State with junk along the main artery to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, a little thought and consideration ought to go into the process.

People don’t come to their natural wonder to see industrialization. They are looking for natural environment, wide-open spaces and unimpeded views. Highway 64 is the entrance to the spectacular South Rim and visited by as many as 5 million visitors a year. We should take great pains to help in the management of one of our nation’s natural and precious resources.

Responsible serious consideration of projects in the area of our national park is minimal. Close consideration (is needed) prior to giving the go-ahead to 400-foot-tall industrial wind turbines and heavy equipment excavation at the doorway to one of our nation’s most precious and spectacular national parks.
