Currently, the Town of Marion is considering the installation of a large wind turbine on Great Hill, a peninsula bordering Wings Cove in Marion. Many of us who live near the proposed site are extremely concerned, for a wind turbine would adversely affect the quality of life for both humans and wildlife.
Great Hill is home to at least two active osprey nests, and is also close to Bird Island with its endangered roseate terns, as well as other migrating birds. Moreover, the proposed site’s proximity to homes on Delano Road and in Piney Point across Wings Cove is very concerning on many levels, chief being the negative health issues associated with subsonic sound and the negative quality of life that ensues from having to live with flickering aircraft warning lights, audible rotor “swishing,” and the angst of plummeting home values.
We, on the South Coast, spend so much time, effort and money protecting our water and marshland. We must be equally vigilant protecting the well-being of our area’s residents, human and animal.
As an environmentalist I have long been a firm believer in wind power, however, turbines should never be installed in residential areas or in sensitive wildlife habitats.
