Wind turbines OK’d on Clay High School campus

The Blade, toledoblade.com 23 November 2010

Oregon City Council Monday unanimously approved a special-use exception permit so Clay High School can add two midsize wind turbines to the campus, which is in a residential district.

The two 750-kilowatt turbines are expected to power 90 percent to 100 percent of Clay’s campus, including Oregon City Schools’ administration building and bus garage.

The vote was taken Monday night after proponents and opponents gave about two hours of comments during both a meeting of council’s public utilities and environmental committee and a public hearing. Proponents were most concerned with the turbines’ effect on migratory birds.

The Clay turbines are part of a $7.3 million two-phase plan that involves partnering with SUREnergy of Sandusky. The firm is seeking investors and government funding to pay for the project, which also calls for putting two 100-kilowatt turbines each at Eisenhower Middle and Coy Elementary schools.
