Wind farm protest walk raises £2,000 for group’s fighting fund

Dozens of protesters who are fighting proposals for a wind farm to be built near Burnham-On-Sea raised much-needed cash to fight the plans during a sponsored walk at the weekend.

Over 30 members of the West Huntspill Wind Farm Action Group, pictured here, took part in Sunday’s walk around East and West Huntspill where EDF and Ecotricity wants to build 14 controversial wind turbines.

“We walked from outside the Crossways Inn to Pawlett, Puriton and Woolavington, before coming back to East Huntspill – the full perimeter of the area where the wind farm could be built,” the group’s Julie Trott told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“The aim of the walk was to link all of the villages in the common cause and to promote awareness to the two wind farm proposals that will affect the lives of many who live in the immediate area.”

“The walk also highlighted just how close many properties within the immediate area would be to these huge 394ft industrial wind turbines. In fact, many properties will in fact be much closer than is recommended and considered safe by many European countries.”

“The walk also raised funds towards the £50,000 cost of fighting the two schemes and we hope to collect around £2,000 from our sponsors.”

EDF says its nine 2MW turbines would be capable of producing enough electricity to supply the annual requirements of over 10,000 homes and could lead to savings of at least 17,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.
