Wind Concerns Ontario calls on Premier McGuinty to halt extravagant wind energy plan

TORONTO – In a letter to Premier McGuinty, Wind Concerns Ontario President John Laforet called on the Ontario Government to place a moratorium on all approvals for industrial wind projects until Province puts people first.

This request falls on the heels of the government’s recent retreats on the Oakville power plant, time of use energy pricing, and electricity rates in general.

“The Ontario Clean Energy Benefit and changes to time of use billing in the last week represent billions of dollars of new subsidies and demonstrate your government recognizes Ontarians can’t afford your green energy schemes. As you are aware Ontario is running the largest deficits in the history of this province, and can ill afford to any further subsidy of your Green Energy plan.” John Laforet said. “What’s more, your stated objective of closing coal fired generating plants with wind turbines can’t be done.”

Wind Concerns Ontario is calling on the Province to recognize that no where in the world has a single jurisdiction successfully used industrial turbines to shut off their coal power plants, and Ontario’s decision to invest massively in wind energy is forcing ‘double capacity’ to be build as natural gas plants are build to operate when wind energy isn’t being generated.

“People are getting sick in Ontario on your watch Premier, because of your government’s refusal to recognize and mitigate the negative health impacts your government’s irresponsible setbacks for industrial turbines are having on families.

People can’t afford their hydro bills because of the extravagant FIT program currently subsidizing multinational wind energy companies.

“Over seventy municipalities across Ontario representing more than two million people that have moved motions of moratorium in support of Wind Concerns Ontario’s position are being ignored as well. The government is already being sued over the green energy act, and now you’re setting yourself up to be defeated at the polls because of it. We are developing a list of vulnerable rural ridings held by your party for our members to target in 2011 if your government continues to ignore these seventy municipalities and Wind Concerns Ontario members concerns.” Laforet added.
