Scam uses wind group’s checks

Greencastle Banner-Graphic, www.bannergraphic.com 20 November 2010

A Citizen in Greencastle received a check Wednesday for $1,975 from the American Wind Energy Association. Greencastle Police Department Chief Tom Sutherlin spoke with a representative from the Western Area Power Administration in Fort Peck, Mont.

She advised that someone has hacked into the UPS account and started sending out fraudulent checks from their company. The Western Area Power Administration has notified their local authorities who are currently investigating their complaint.

If anyone receives a check from the American Wind Energy Association that comes to them via a UPS package they need not cash it and can file a complaint online through the FBI Indianapolis Office.
