Wind farm fight hots up

The head of an environmental pressure group that has successfully opposed planned wind farms is meeting activists near Holsworthy to advise them on their campaign.

The Stop Turbine Over Proliferation in Torridge, STOPIT, members are fighting plans for six 126metre high turbines near Meddon and close to Holsworthy and Bradworthy.

The activists have invited North Devon Campaign for the Protection of Rural England chairman Bob Barfoot to a strategic meeting next month.

STOPIT spokesman Peter Austin said: “These turbines will overshadow our homes and ruin our quality of life. Mr Barfoot will suggest ways we can help get this proposal stopped.”

Mr Barfoot was behind successful campaigns by Paul’s Moor and Bickham Moor residents to get proposals for wind farms in their areas scrapped.

He is also directly and indirectly involved in several wind farm public inquiries in North Devon and further afield.

He said: “I deal with people against these wind farms from all over England and their stories are the same.

“In most cases these wind farms are either planned to go too close to homes, and I think there is no doubt having one of these on your doorstep can affect peoples health and well being.”

The campaign meeting on December 3 at 7.30pm in Meddon village hall comes as news of yet more wind turbines are planned for the area.

An application for six 410ft high turbines at Wheelers Cross near Bradworthy is in the process of being prepared by Wind Prospect Development of Bristol.
