Virginia county adopts wind farm regulations

Associated Press, www.wvva.com 18 November 2010

Rockingham County has adopted regulations governing where and how large-scale wind farms can be built.

The ordinance approved Wednesday by the Board of Supervisors also limits the amount of noise wind farms can make.

Local media outlets report that the ordinance requires developers to obtain a special-use permit from the board to build wind farms.

Turbines can be up to 500 feet tall but they must located at least 800 feet from any residential or public structure. The maximum noise level from adjoining property lines is 60 decibels.

A subsidiary of Dominion and Solaya Inc. have expressed interest in testing weather conditions in the northwestern part of the county.
