Goodhue County will join test case on wind energy

RED WING – The controversy over wind power in Goodhue County was supposed to reach a conclusion last month. Instead, officials continue struggling with details.

On Tuesday, Goodhue County commissioners weighed whether to become a party to Administrative Law Judge Kathleen Sheehy’s contested case hearing – the first such hearing involving wind energy in state history, according to Goodhue County Attorney Stephen Betcher. County officials had a wide-ranging discussion, often testy, before a unanimous vote to join the fray.

“Some control of our destiny is much preferable than rolling the dice, which is what it comes down to,” Betcher said.

Goodhue County will join at least four other parties for Friday afternoon’s pre-hearing meeting at the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission in St. Paul. Read about it in Wednesday’s print edition.
