MPs make bid to limit wind farm sites

Councils should be allowed to ban wind turbines from being built too close to homes, MPs will argue next week.

Planning committees would be able to impose minimum distances under a Bill to be revealed by backbench MPs.

The move comes amid complaints over the noise created by wind turbines, the impact on property values, how much energy they produce and the disruption caused to communities while they are constructed.

Selby and Ainsty’s Conservative MP Nigel Adams, who has criticised the lack of guidelines over the suitable placing of turbines, is among those backing the Bill which is due to be revealed on Wednesday.

Mr Adams said: “I am hoping that the Government will take onboard our suggestion to give local councils the powers to decide on appropriate proximity distances of onshore wind farms in their respective areas.

“We are hopeful that our plans will get a fair hearing.”
