Wind turbine response blows this way and that in Colebrook

COLEBROOK – A proposal to build six commercial wind turbines on two separate properties near the Norfolk and Winsted town lines received mixed reviews from those who attended an informational meeting on the project at Town Hall Wednesday night.

Some 50 people attended and many of them raised questions about noise, safety, wildlife, property values and other quality of life concerns to the representatives of BNE Energy Inc., the West Hartford-based firm proposing the turbines.

BNE would place the 1.6-megawatt, 328-foot high turbines on new large, undeveloped properties – three at 29 Flagg Hill Road and three at the corner or Route 44 and Rock Hall Road. The town has no jurisdiction over the proposal; BNE’s application must be submitted to the Connecticut Siting Council.

Eva Villanova, who owns property at 28 Flagg Hill Road, said she has concerns about whether the turbines are safe. Ice could fly off the blades in the winter and when it is sunny, the spinning of the blades could cause the sunlight to flicker, possibly distracting drivers traveling through the area.
