Bingham County denies new wind project

Reporter: Johnny Archer, KPVI News 6, www.kpvi.com 11 November 2010

The Bingham County Planning and Zoning Committee denied Blue Ribbon Energy’s proposal Wednesday night to build 27 wind turbines in the Wolverine Canyon area of Bingham County.

Several committee members said there was a lack of information in Blue Ribbon Energy’s application to build the turbines. One member said there was no definitive plan presented on what roadways the company would use to transport the materials to Wolverine Canyon, raising concern about traffic and road damage.

The future of the wind turbines was also brought up in Wednesday’s decision. Some committee members felt there needed to be more research in how the wind turbines will affect Bingham County after 20 years. There was also a request to determine if the turbines will end up being an expense to the county rather than a profitable investment in the long term.

The owners of Blue Ribbon Energy say they fulfilled all the information they were required to submit in the application, along with additional information. But they understand that the county is in a learning process of how to authorize wind projects since wind energy is a relatively new venture for the county.

Blue Ribbon Energy will have ten days to submit an appeal for the Bingham County Commissioners to review.
