Wind farms ‘a burden’: Campaigners claim 94,000 reject plans for another

Holderness residents fighting to prevent a third wind farm in their parish claim they have the backing of 94,000 people across the East Riding.

The Hilston and Tunstall Residents’ Association is battling plans by Energie Kontor to build a three-turbine wind farm at Monkwith, between the two villages.

It has received support from 45 parish councils in the county who represent 94,200 people.

Consent has already been given for wind farms in the Roos parish at Sunderland Farm and Tedder Hill.

Jackie Cracknell, of the residents’ association, told the Mail: “We have huge support for our battle against this and 89 per cent of Holderness residents are backing us.

“We feel having three wind farms in one parish sets a dangerous precedent and is a step too far.”

A public inquiry into Energie Kontor’s plans was opened yesterday at County Hall in Beverley and a public session was due to be held at Roos Memorial Hall last night.

The residents’ association has gained ‘Rule 6’ status which means representatives can take part in proceedings.

Spokesman Dr Brian Wells told the inquiry: “We are opposed to the application because, in our opinion, it would have an unacceptable impact as a stand-alone scheme and we are even more concerned about the cumulative impact.

“We believe it is unreasonable for communities to carry such a burden.”

David Hardy, representing Energie Kontor, said: “Professional officers of the council have recommended approval for this scheme but elected members have failed to treat this proposal expeditiously and sympathetically.

“The proposed development here at Monkwith is a good scheme in an excellent location.”

The inquiry is set to last four days.
