Wind turbine proposal a source of controversy in Litchfield

WKTV News Channel 2, www.wktv.com 28 October 2010

Wind power is a sore subject in Litchfield and Sauquoit, and Tuesday night, a group opposed to wind turbines in their community hosted a debate on the issue.

Albany-based North Wind and Power LLC has proposed putting a dozen or more turbines around Dry Hill in Litchfield – their exact locations not yet confirmed.

Tuesday night’s debate was to educate neighbors on what wind turbines would mean for the community. Residents opposing the turbines say they stand to lose more than just their views of the Sauquoit Valley.

“Are we going to saddle our children with tremendous debt for turbines that aren’t even going to be functioning when they are paid for?” asked Jonathan Knauth of Save Sauquoit Valley Views.

“Remember, renewable energy is made right here,” said Patrick Doyle, president of North Wind in Power. “Not in Venezuela…all of it is right here.”

Some land owners are in favor of wind power because they could see a big financial windfall if the turbines are built on their property.
