Palmyra Twp. planners to define guidelines for wind farms

The Palmyra Township Planning Commission hopes to get a handle on the complicated wind farm issue as soon as late next year. The commission took the first steps to confront the controversial subject Tuesday night, after Jeff Ehlert, of Blissfield Wind Energy, addressed the township board regarding his company’s interest in leasing land along the township’s southern and eastern borders for the possible development of so-called wind farms, which are tracts of land on which wind-powered electricity generators are erected.

Blissfield Wind Energy and other alternative energy companies are simultaneously leasing land and seeking permission in Riga and Ogden townships to construct wind energy developments.

At the Palmyra Township Board meeting held earlier this month, Elhert told the trustees that his company wanted to go through the proper channels by presenting a request for favorable wind turbine zoning ordinances to the board first before reserving a spot on the township’s planning commission agenda.

The planning commission is currently in the process of a reevaluation of all of the township’s zoning ordinances, which have not been reviewed in their entirety for decades. Elhert was present at the planning commission to make his company’s introductory wind development presentation.
