As investors and developers look to the island of Saaremaa as a potential location for wind farms, five municipalities from Saare County have said they oppose such initiatives.
Currently, the municipalities of Muhu, Lümanda, Mustjala, Salme and Kärla say they are against wind farms in their jurisdictions, Saare County development director Agne Peetersoo told the newspaper, Saarte Hääl.
Municipalities cited environmentally sensitive landscapes as the reason for their resistance.
The island of Saaremaa has one of the biggest wind energy resources in Estonia, but there are also many environmental preservation zones, protecting eagle nests and black storks among other species.
