University of Illinois wants wind turbines

UPI, www.upi.com 28 October 2010

The University of Illinois says it is seeking a qualified firm to build utility-scale wind turbines to be linked to the school’s electrical distribution grid.

The South Campus Wind Turbine Project is the University’s latest effort in improving campus sustainability and seeking renewable sources for energy, a university release said Thursday.

The school is considering one to three turbines, each of which would provide at least 1.5 megawatts of wind-generated electricity.

The introduction of wind energy to the Urbana-Champaign campus is part of the university’s commitment to have 5 percent of the campus’s total energy coming from renewable sources by 2015, the release said.

The long-term goal is to have 25 percent renewable energy sources by 2025, the university said.
