California Highway Patrol closed Tehachapi-Willow Springs Road from Cameron Canyon Road to Highline Road from 4:35 p.m. Sat., Oct. 23 to 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25 because of potential danger from a runaway wind turbine.

The CHP closes roads near runaway wind turbines for the safety of motorists.

“The runaway wind turbine, when it deteriorates or explodes, can send scrap metal and steel up to a mile away,” said CHP Officer Ed Smith.

Turbines get out of control when the gears become disengaged and there is no way to stop them. Mechanics have to wait until the wind dies down.

The turbine was one of the older ones, he said.

It was near the summit, adjacent to Willow Springs Road.
