I offer a rebuttal to your Oct. 12 editorial, “Just one turbine.”
Recently, I had the opportunity to present some of the objections at the Old King’s Highway Regional Historic District appeals board.
You write that Aquacultural Research Corp. faces a financial hardship with its $100,000 utility bill. However, even after taxpayers fund $900,000 in grants to ARC, the purchase of a $2.2 million wind turbine and maintenance costs would increase ARC’s utility bill by approximately 25 percent.
As I stated before the appeals board, the only way for this project to be feasible is for ARC to become an energy-selling utility or to sell the turbine to a third-party developer that could benefit from the federal, state and town tax write-offs.
You say the economic benefit to one local business is worth altering the very essence of the historic district. I think tens of thousands of homeowners and visitors would disagree. This turbine would affect not only Dennis residents. The closest neighbors are at Gray’s Beach in Yarmouthport. Furthermore, at least six agricultural properties along Route 6A would have every right to demand their own turbines.
This is one turbine too many.
