School Committee upset over windmill location

Another heated discussion ensued at Tuesday’s School Committee meeting about the safety and location of the 120-foot-tall wind turbine behind Nantucket High School that is ready to start spinning as soon as some final adjustments are completed.

Two weeks after a number of neighbors said they were not informed about the three-bladed Northwind 100 turbine’s location so close to the school, committee members raised their own concerns, saying that somewhere along the way they were excluded from the planning process and a lack of communication has left them on the receiving end of complaints about the safety, location and possible noise produced by the windmill. Dave Fredericks, a regional vice president with utility provider National Grid who helped spearhead the project, addressed the committee Tuesday night.

“We thought we were reaching out every reasonable way we possibly could about what role to play and so on,” Fredericks said.
