County council extends ban on large wind turbines

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – No large wind-turbine projects will be popping up in Whatcom County in the next six months.

The county council on Tuesday night extended a moratorium for large wind energy systems.

Council members Barbara Brenner and Ken Mann have been working on long-term solutions.

“I’m advocating more for a performance-based system where that if a windmill is quiet – no matter how big it is or how much energy it’s generating, if it’s quiet – it can be much closer to a property line or existing homes,” Mann said.

The temporary ban was first enacted in February in response to a project being planned for Squalicum Mountain.

Area residents were up in arms over the plans.

County planners are using the council member’s proposals as they craft permanent rules for wind turbines.
